Network World Fusion, 06/30/04

Archos today launched its Pocket Video Recorder AV400, a portable digital video recorder with TV recording and scheduling features, as well as audio, photo and data storage.

Archos-AV400.jpg The AV400 lets you record TV shows and movies directly from a TV, VCR or cable/satellite receiver through its TV Cradle (basically a docking station). After the show gets transferred, users can watch the show on the AV400's 3.5-inch (or 3.8-inch) color LCD screen. Music, photos and other data can be transferred to the device from a PC or Macintosh, the company said.

The AV400 comes in different storage capacities, from 20G-bytes (about 80 hours of content) up to 100G-bytes (about 400 hours of content), and includes a removable battery (on the 20G-byte version), an external speaker (listen without headphones), and a built-in Compact Flash card reader.

The AV400 Recording Scheduler software controls the tuner inside the VCR or cable/satellite receiver to automatically change the channel and record the program based on time and duration. The AV400 Scheduler also can synchronize with Yahoo TV Guide (where available) over the Internet, so recordings can be prepared weeks or months in advance, Archos said.

The device supports MP3, WMA and WAV format files for digial audio. Adding the optional FM Radio and Remote Control accessory lets users listen to FM radio with MP3 recording features. It includes Archos' retro-recording system, which can save an entire song from the start even though it may have already started playing.

The AV400 will be available worldwide next week (first week of July), and will cost $549.95 (for the 20G-byte model) or $799.95 (for the 100G-byte version).
