The move to new technologies like multicore processors, server virtualization and grid computing bring the prospects of more efficient data centers. But they also bring with them some challenges. Not the least of which is how vendors will charge for their software. The old per-CPU model just doesn’t work in next generation data centers.

VMware announced today that its free server virtualization product, VMware Server, is now generally available. The product, which is basically its low-end GSX Server, was first made free in a beta program that began this past February. AMD continues to eat into Intel’s market share and the AMD customers I talk to just can’t get over how much more energy efficient the Opteron-based servers are. So it’s not surprising to see Intel focusing on energy efficiency and performance.

If you’re like most IT managers, you’re starting to look more closely at how much energy servers consume and what level of heat they give off. The power/performance measurement is playing a bigger role in server buying decisions. But what about taking this kind of environmental consciousness a step further?
