There’s no question that virtualization has moved beyond hype for x86 systems. Sure it’s true that slicing and dicing physical systems into multiple, isolated containers is something that has its roots in the very high end on mainframes and Unix boxes. But little x86-based servers are getting more powerful. And, come next year, these servers will have virtualization technology built right into their hardware

At the same time, software from virtualization specialists such as VMware, Microsoft and SWsoft is getting more mature. All this means that the way you deploy x86 systems likely will change over the next few years. Remember when scaling out on a bunch of low-end boxes used to be the way to go? Well, the tide is turning. IT managers in growing numbers are opting to run multiple virtual servers on a smaller number of physical systems. IDC says it’s already seeing the effects of the trend on server buying habits: end users are gobbling up better configured, higher processing x86-based systems . Tune into IDC’s Web conference next Wednesday to get more detail on what the research firm is seeing and prepare to see double, triple and beyond with your x86 systems in the years ahead.
