Easy as pie (virtually)

If we had to pick just one theme to describe the goings-on in your data center in 2006, virtualization would probably be a good bet. From servers to storage to desktops, it’s all about carving up physical systems into multiple virtual instances that can handle workloads more efficiently.

Data centers are morphing into more dynamic environments and virtualization is a key building block. To make it easier to try out virtualization – especially on the desktop – vendors are coming out with some simple tools. Check out VMware’s VMware player, which is free and lets anyone run VMs on a Linux or Windows desktop. Start-up Parallels also says it has a simple solution for carving up workstations. Ben Rudolph, marketing manager at the company, says the installation wizards make Parallels Workstation so easy to use that his mom was able to build a Windows XP virtual machine by herself. “And I didn’t even get any panicked phone calls,” he says.
