If you’re in the middle of consolidating your data center or planning a data center move, HP can relate. HP today announced it plans to consolidate its existing 85 data centers around the globe into six larger facilities – two each in Atlanta, Houston and Austin, Texas.
CEO Mark Hurd has talked about the consolidation plan since this past summer when he outlined a massive reorganization for HP. HP execs say the reorganization will help its IT department function better by simplifying things and allowing more flexibility. In addition, HP expects to reduce its spending on IT by $1 billion during the next few years. Not bad.
The new data centers are designed to be “lights out” facilities, meaning they will be managed remotely. They will be populated with Itanium-based Integrity servers and BladeSystem servers, as well as StorageWorks networked storage. The whole thing will be managed with HP’s OpenView management software.
As far as heat and power, HP is using some new technologies to help improve airflow for better cooling. HP execs say they hope to reduce their utility costs by about 25% as a result.
