Web analysis and the 2005 Emetrics Summit
By Gearhead, NetworkWorld.com, 04/08/05
"Web analysis is statistics, not accounting. Absolute precision is impossible. The problems listed above are an inevitable consequence of the nature of internet technology, not because we don’t care or because analytics software is shoddy."
So concludes a useful article by Brandt Dainow, CEO of Think Metrics, on the accuracy of measuring how people interact with Web sites -- a topic otherwise called Web metrics.
The whole world of Web metrics has become a huge business in the last few years and as Web sites have become more complex the technology and art of divining how, when, how long, and why people visit Web sites has become increasingly important to on-line businesses.
If you are struggling with this topic and you want to find out what the state of the art is the place to go is the 2005 Emetrics Summit in either Santa Barbara (June 1, 2, and 3) or London (June 8, 9, and 10).
The Emetrics Summit run by our old friend Jim Sterne (who is incidentally president of the Web Analytics Association) is an outstanding event that brings together experts from both vendors and end users (all hard core "data geeks") in a unique conference format. This format involves both stage presentations (Santa Barbara, London) and collaborative group work sessions (Santa Barbara and London) to explore and develop thinking on specific topics.
Highly recommended.
