Intel inside Apple? Not likely.
By Gearhead, NetworkWorld.com, 05/26/05
Ignore the talk of Apple considering using Intel chips instead of PowerPC processors. It just ain't gonna happen.
Despite very recent reports in the Wall Street Journal that Apple and Intel were talking about the possibility it seems that not only do the two companies have nothing to say on the matter but more-or-less their entire VAR community dismisses the idea out of hand.
There's little doubt that many of us (except IBM executives) would be overjoyed to see OS X on non-PowerPC hardware but there's no justification for it. Apple's niche is well-defended by the hardware barrier, a loyal user base, and fantastic branding. Jumping to Intel chips would erode the hardware barrier, quite possibly damage the brand, and the potential support problems could crucify the user base unless OS X becomes available on the standard PC platform which seems about as likely as Microsoft deciding to open source Windows XP.
