Google mapping cities in 3D
By Gearhead, NetworkWorld.com, 06/09/05
In its continuing quest for world domination through data capture and distribution Google has begun a new project that is very intriguing: They are going to map cities using truck mounted high resolution laser scanners. This data could than be integrated with photos from Google's excellent Keyhole product to create searchable, high resolution, highly detailed photorealistic three dimensional maps.
Google's first mapping target is San Francisco to be followed by other major US cities.
According to Silicon Valley Watcher article, "The Google 3D project would be used to highlight and distinguish the company's push into local business listings—the next big opportunity in online advertising."
