No new shell for Longhorn
By Gearhead, NetworkWorld.com, 06/15/05
In case you haven't heard, Longhorn will NOT have a new shell. Darn.
The hype about Monad (that's the MS code name for the new shell which is also called MSH) got everyone way excited but it turns out that it won't be included in Longhorn!
In a nutshell: "The idea (behind Monad) is easy: Build a decent, programmable, scriptable shell language/facility. MSH is a combination of the command line abilities of a BASH shell, the richness of a programming language like Perl or Ruby, combined with the rigor and common sense of .NET."
Originally slated (way back in December last year) to "ship as a feature of Exchange 12 in 2H06 (target)" and in Windows after that ("Release vehicle is undefined. Monad will support WS03 SP1, XP SP2, Longhorn."). Since then, things have changed and while Monad will be in Exchange 12 according to a BetaNews article, Microsoft Senior Vice President Bob Muglia commented at Tech Ed 2005: "It will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver ... We're also building a next-generation user interface, taking our existing Microsoft Management Console (MMC) technology to the next level in terms of usability."
Also note that for all potential the benefits of MSH there have been concerns over potential security risks (see the Network World article "Future Windows component could spur old-school viruses").
