Linux, OSS, and Microsoft
By Gearhead, NetworkWorld.com, 08/11/05
if you are tracking the state of Linux and the Open Source Software movement you have got to read "LinuxWorld: Reporter's notebook" and "Microsoft open source exec: Not the loneliest guy in Redmond".
We were intrigued by the comments of Bill Hilf, Microsoft's point man on open source, in both his presentation at LinuxWorld and in the Network World interview particularly in the light of "Microsoft boosts efforts to beat Linux".
The problem we see is that Microsoft is making a play for the moral high ground by appearing to embrace OSS while sharpening its knives as it escalates its battle with Linux. The fact that this is a fine example of spin doctoring is obvious when you consider that Microsoft's idea of open source, they call it Shared Source is, to put it nicely, somewhat lacking (also see "Microsoft releases source code to open source community" ).
