As a member of the press, I can only imagine how long network managers have wanted to take the concentrated analysis and trouble-shooting capabilities of network protocol analysis tools, such as Network General's Sniffer, and apply it to enterprise-scale management problems. Now it could be possible.
In the past, network managers would take a laptop loaded with software, or even drag out the handheld analyzers, to tackle tough problems scattered around network segments. Network General recently upgraded its product suite with management and reporting capabilities that the company says will make it possible to manage many distributed Sniffer probes across an enterprise network. The upgrades also make it possible to aggregate and correlate the data for multiple probes, generate reports on near real-time and historical data, and tackle WAN performance issues alongside LAN metrics. The upgrades will make it possible for Sniffer, which has been tossed back and forth from McAfee to Network Associates to McAfee and now back to Network General, to mature and better compete with enterprise-scale products from the likes of NetScout.
