Fluke Networks, maker of network testing software, WAN management tools and handheld protocol analyzers, last week announced it had agreed to buy network and application performance management software maker Visual Networks.

Fluke Networks will pay $about $75 million in cash, according to a Fluke statement. The companies expect the deal to close in the first quarter of next year. Visual Networks most recently released products around VoIP measurement, analysis and management, which could complement Fluke Networks' own voice testing tools. On top of voice, Fluke Networks this past year has made news around WAN, expert analysis features across its distributed product line. The combination of Visual with Fluke Networks' technologies could accelerate the company's plans to move more toward delivering enterprise-scale software and shake off its handheld-only reputation. Network General plans to do the same.
