Hyperic, a start-up that has roots in open source, today decided to make its commercial management software -- Hyperic HQ -- available under an open source license.
Following the trend of several open source project sponsors, Hyperic executives say making the company's commercial product available under an open source license model will help with the ongoing development of it. The commercial version of Hyperic HQ started out as a hybrid product of sorts - part open source and part proprietary technologies. Hyperic was spun out of Covalent, which focused on the security and support needs of the Apache Web Server, and Hyperic took Covalent Application Manager and broadened its reach to include the ability to manage the entire Web and open source infrastructure stack, says Javier Soltero, Hyperic CEO.
Soltero says he hopes the company's move to an open source model will encourage a community around Hyperic HQ and enable IT managers to expand their management tool as it suits their networks' needs. Hyperic is also offering a free, downloadable open source development kit for building plug-ins that support specific software and hardware. The kit is now available here.
The company is also announcing the Hyperic HQ Enterprise Subscription, which Hyperic says offers 24X7 support and features such as remote resource control, role-based security, log/security event tracking, policy-based management, and problem identification. Effective immediately, the Hyperic HQ open source platform is available in binary form at no cost, and the Hyperic HQ Enterprise Subscription is immediately available.
Next month Hyperic will make the complete source code for the platform freely available for download from its Web site under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Also in July, Hyperic says it will unveil a Hyperic HQ community portal dedicated to user collaboration and code sharing.
