Priscilla Milam, featured this week in Network World's Management Strategies section, didn't know networking was her calling from Day One. The current IT executive at the North Harris Montgomery Community College District in The Woodlands, Texas, says she started out part-time in the computer center back when she attended Texas A&M, then worked for the government and eventually found her way into the early days of networking.
Milam heads up VoIP, wireless and IT service management initiatives across the district's five colleges and seven educational facilities. Because Milam also teaches annually in her role as vice chancellor of IT operations, she communicates to today's IT students that broadening your horizons into the business realm will get you further in networking that keeping your head down and focusing only on technology.
"I tell them to look over the perspectives and publications that talk about the pulse of the business," Milam says, adding that finding a technology area in which one can excel is equally important.
