New Radio@AOL service features new format

By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 05/28/03

AOL today launched a series of enhancements to its Radio@AOL service for both broadband and narrowband customers. The most dramatic of the changes is a completed switch from using RealNetworks' format to AOL's own Ultravox platform that's based on Dolby's AAC codec. Previously, only broadband content was delivered using Ultravox. The new version does mean changes for broadband users, including clips that used to be delivered at 128K bit/sec are now delivered at 64K bit/sec with same or better sound quality. On the dial up side, clips are delivered at 20K bit/sec with initial buffer times reduced by 200%, according to Jim Van Huysee, general manager of the Radio@AOL Network.

The switch to using its own Ultravox delivery platform benefits both AOL and its customers. [AOL hasn't completely ditched RealNetworks. The company is still using RealNetworks technology in other areas of its business.] For AOL, it can better manage its streaming infrastructure. For the users, especially those with broadband, the reduction is required bandwidth means they'll have more capacity to do other tasks like reading e-mail and surfing the Web while listening to the streaming content. AOL's also added a new feature that allows its Instant Messenger users to send a link to the current song being played to a buddy so they can listen along at the same time.

Radio@AOL delivers about 175 "stations" to AOL subscribers, with a mix of live simulcast broadcasts and AOL-only stations that are generated via a server-side playlist. The company recently signed a deal to offer certain Infinity Broadcasting stations via the Radio@AOL service.

08/20/03 UPDATE: Please note that Network World is not affiliated with AOL so we have no way of answering all your techical support-related questions regarding Radio@AOL. I did some checking on the Internet and didn't come across any obvious spots to point you for help. I would suggest contacting AOL customer support directly.

As soon as I installed the new 9.0 version of AOL, is imposible to listen to radio. I can't pass step 2 "retrieving stations". It just idles there. So frustrating, that i am considering switch from AOL.

Radio@aol.pesters my signing on to the internet.waste of time i should say.

Posted by: raymondo ocamp on August 20, 2003 03:18 PM

I understand the Radio AOL 9.0 is not available for Windows ME users for a month or so. The popup comes on when clicking on Radio AOL and says 'temporarily unavailable". Maddening. It worked great with AOL 8.0. Why not Windows ME. Anyone have the answers?

Posted by: Carol on August 20, 2003 11:20 PM

I would like to know which station I can go to for
artists I like such as: Eagles, Journey, Bon Jovi, Lynard Sknyard. I can't seem to find these particular artists wherever I go on AOL radio.

Posted by: Nate on September 18, 2003 01:54 PM

I finally found a way to fix the problems I was having with AOL RADIO. For weeks it would auto lauch and then idle at step two, freezing the entire program. Every time I asked AOL support for help they told me to access radio setup and uncheck auto-launch, but I couldn't even GET to radio set up before it would freeze.

If you are having the same problems and you are using a Norton Firewall try this:

1. Go into the Options section of Norton Personal Firewall.
2. Click on Web Content.
3. Click on Ad Blocking.
4. Click on /bannerad and then click Remove.

After hours of contact with 6 techs , on six separate occasions, I have not been able to delete the radio from popping up on my computer every time I log on. This is very annoying and agrivating. Each had the same beginning tecnique to free up the setup key but none worked. All had different remedies after the first failed. What's happening?

Posted by: Jimmy on September 18, 2003 10:05 PM

Once again, as Stephanie noted, to delete AOL Radio from popping-up every time you go into AOL, just push the Radio Setup tab when in Radio, then click the Auto-Launch Preference tab, and, finally, uncheck the box for Auto-Launch! Problem solved! As for AOL help, I agree that you can barely understand the technicians (most technicians are in India, and are very frustrating to deal with!) Unfortunately, this is also true of HP, Dell, and other companies; simply stated, it's economics: Indian workers come cheap! As for AOL 9.0, it SUCKS! After taking THREE HOURS to download it via modem, two days later I was deleting it from my computer, and going back to 8.0! When my six months' free trial through Dell is over, I'll probably drop AOL completely (I've had other problems with them). Anybody have a recommendation as to the BEST ISP? If so, thanks!

What is going on!

I feel someone should take care of this little problem everyone is having. We all pay our accounts on time to AOL so don,t you think you should correct your eras on time? This is a very enjoyable option to use i think, but if you can not fix this in a timely manner it will distress alot of your customer, or at least give us some answers or comments on the subject.

I see that I'm not the only one being pestered by AOL Radio popping up when I log on to AOL. I want to delete it permanently. If I don't close it quickly it causes many technical problems in my computer. Your responses to the customers to solve the problem above is not satisfactory for a large corporation such as AOL. To tell the customer to contact tech support is passing the buck. Why don't you check it out with tech support and put out a notice to all concerned AOL subscribers. Appreciate your time

hey folks,

It sounds like you may have inadvertently chose the autolaunch feature to start your Radio@AOL player if your player pops up upon start. You should be able to disable by following these steps.

1. go to Radio Setup (it's located under the player controls)
2. Click on the Auto-Launch preference tab
3. Uncheck the box next to 'Play Radio@AOL automatically when I sign on to AOL.
4. Click Save.

If you continue to have problems, please contact the folks at AOL Member Services by going to keyword HELP or by calling 1-800-827-6364. Your other option is to click again on the "help" button on your Radio@AOL player but select the last item "Getting Additional Help on AOL". Click on "Live Help" to receive assistance.

If you have any other questions or comments about the programming on Radio@AOL - please send your questions to radiocomments@aol.com.

THEN, WHEN THE SET UP WINDOW PULLS UP, CLICK THE TAB AT THE TOP WHICH READS 'AUTO LAUNCH PREFERENCE' AND UNCLICK THE BOX THAT SAYS PLAY RADIO AUTOMATICALLY WHEN I SIGN ON'.AND MAKE SURE WHEN YOU ARE DONE YOU HIT 'SAVE' AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN THAT SHOULD DO IT. To fix the problem of not be able to access aol radio if you have a Norton firewall I did the following and it worked:

Click on your Norton frewall. Click on web content.Click on Ad Blocking tab. Scroll down to bannerad. Click remove and ok.
The radio aol should come up when you try it. Once at the aol radio, click Radio setup and make sure autolaunch is unchecked. Now it won't pop on when you sign on to aol and you can turn it on when you want it on only.

I'm looking for information on how to make the links in Radio@AOL go to the web instead of the AOL client.

Currenly, if you select the artist or album links, Radio@AOL passes search terms to the AOL client which takes you to AOL Music Search. I'd like it to go to All Music Guide on the web www.allmusic.com (which is where AOL gets its data).

Does anyone know if there's a place in the registry or elsewhere to change this?

Thanks

It won't be bothering me each time I sign on and someone's little ol survey questionaire ain't gonna be so nice. AOL needs to address this situation and soon!

It is absolutely incredible that Aol has not done something to remedy, what seems to be, a reasonably narrow range of issues with Radio Aol.I have spent close to 2 days trying to get this stuff to work with my version 7. It worked fine until maybe a week or so ago. My time and NOT getting frustrated is worth more to me than this. Judging by the comments surrounding version 9.... I won't be going there either until they no longer support my version. The product... Radio Aol is nice but there are other music options. It looks like that's what I'll have to do. Goodbye Radio Aol. (Your tech services and auto fixes don't work in this area for me!!)

Using AOL 7, I typed in keyword "RADIO DIL" and downloaded the program (I had to "show" it where to find AOL.exe on drive C) and now I'm listening to my favorite wallpaper music again on Radio AOL. It would seem AOL rushed version 9 to market before it was sufficiently beta-tested.

If I can't get radioaol to stop popping up everytime I open I am going to quit aol. There service isn't that great anyway

Posted by: Jay Wayman on January 17, 2004 08:34 AM

For those that are computer challenged. AOL Radio can be stopped when signing on by going to the 'radio setup' button below the play and stop buttons. Then go to the 2nd tab, 'Start-up Setting' and UNCHECK the box that reads 'Make Radio@aol my start up setting'. And then hit save. Done!

Posted by: Cody on January 17, 2004 02:34 PM

Again, For those that are having problems with the AOL Radio not loading all the way and hanging while loading. Try this. close the AOL Radio and goto AOL Keyword and type in 'RADIODIL' (caps not needed) and hit go or press enter. That will reinstall the AOL Radio.

Posted by: Jacqueline Jones on January 19, 2004 12:57 PM

I LOVE AOL Radio and I haven't been able to access it for about two months now. I tried keyword "radio dil" - didn't work. It keeps giving me an Internet Script Error at Step 3 (Saying "Object requied...http://radaol-prod-web-rr.streamops.aol.com/radio/radioclient/narrowband/html/RadioMain.html?") I tried IM'ing a tech who suggested I download Active X, but that didn't work either. I pray that it's just my outdated computer (even though it just started happening out of nowhere one day) and I'm hoping that when I finally buy a new one, AOL Radio will work again. I miss it very much! It's the only reason I stay with AOL. Like everyone else, if it's not fixed, I will move to another Internet provider.

Does anyone else get this Internet Script Error? If so, any suggestions? If I find an answer, I will post it here as well.

Posted by: Kari on January 21, 2004 04:28 PM

Ooh, I took Khalid's advice above and downloaded radio@netscape and it's the same stations as AOL Radio! Finally after months of not working, I'm back to listening to my favorite New Wave station! The sound quality is not as good as AOL, but it could just be my modem connection. Still, I'm thrilled that I have music again! Thank you for the suggestion, Khalid!

Download it here (it's free and a very nice program!):

YOU CANT GET THE POP UP TO STOP POPPING UP BY PRESSING SET UP BECAUSE ITS FROZEN ON STEP 3. Miss RADIO AOL. Hope you can get it fixed soon.

Posted by: Bil on January 27, 2004 07:12 PM

Well everyone I have a solution to your radio problems. Unfortunately it is an extreme one. Only do this if you have an aol cd that represents your current version. The only way I have found to get rid of the radio is to "uninstall" aol (if you have more than one version uninstall all of them) Then reinstall and never click on radio again... feel free to email me if you are unsure how to do that. My mom is having the same problem that is what I plan on doing as well as letting AOL know they need to fix these things or not offer them if they can't!!!!

Posted by: K~ on January 28, 2004 01:45 PM

Ok, I'm pretty sure a lot of people are having problems with the radio think when it pops up when you sign on. Here's how to get rid of it:
To turn Radio@AOL Auto-Launch off

1. Start Radio@AOL (AOL Keyword: Radio).
2. Click Radio Setup, and then click the Auto-Launch Preference tab.
3. Click the check box next to Play Radio@AOL
automatically when you sign on to AOL to clear it.
4. Click Save.

I got this off the aol help feature thing. mine doesnt work because of the active x thing. if anyone knows how to download that please tell me. also let me know if this thing works.

RE: RADIO AOL not working EVEN after downloading the Radio DIL. Try the following:

1) while signed on, click on "settings" at top,
2) then click on "internet (web) options" tab.
3) Make sure globe icon is already highlighted,
4) then click on "custom level,"
5) scroll down to "Active X controls and

6) now make sure all appropriate Active X

I hope this helps you. Jeff

How do I download ultravox active x ?, that Radio AOL says I need to download ?

Posted by: Joe on March 3, 2004 08:30 PM

The latest Netscape Radio Player is "FAR" superior to Radio@AOL. It has a better design, more choices on Graphic Equalizer, more Radio "Pre-Sets", and several Display options. I recommend Radio@Netscape over Radio@AOL anyday of the week. Just my OWN PERSONAL OPINION of course and we ALL know what people think of "Personal Opinions" right?.......lol.

Posted by: Frederick on March 9, 2004 04:20 AM

I have three operating systems working on two hardisks. All three use AOL as the isp.AOL radio worked fine on two of those systems but not on the third.
I tried just about everything to get the damn thing working, and spent a long time researching what the problem could be. Finally I uninstalled AOL from the operating system and done a clean install from an AOL disk. I signed on "clicked" on AOL radio and done the downloaded for their player - and yes it worked.
I can only assume (in my case at least) that the AOL software installed had become corrupted in some way. It may just be worth trying this before getting bogged down with the technical aspects of it all. A different AOL installation disk would be the best bet if you are going to try this (Plenty of those about eh?)

I cannot listen to the radio in the AOL version 9.0. It says procedure entry point PNXWindowID@UBEPAXXZ cannot be locatated on pngu3266.dll. What do I do?

The tips how do install Ultravox ActiveX Control (see above) dont seem to work anymore for AOL 8.0. Anyone know how to get this module? I am not getting any response to written TechSupport inquiries to AOL Germany.

I TYPE IN RADIO DIL ON A.O.L.KEYWORD AND GUESS WHAT.... EVERY TIME IT LOGS ME ONTO "THIS PAGE" GRRRRRRRRRRRRR....WHATS THE POINT IN HAVING AOL RADIO WHEN WE CAN'T GET IT..I CONTACTED A.O.L AND THEY SAID THEY ARE UNABLE TO HELP

Posted by: ROY on March 14, 2004 02:02 PM

It would seem that people are becoming a little bit suicidal about this AOL Radio thing.
Perhaps if a whole bunch of people contacted the "Samaritans" they in turn would contact AOL and a result would be forthcoming.

Or you can - Go: Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add/Remove programs.

Highlight AOL and click on Change/Remove Programs.
Remove AOL from your computer and re-install again from an AOL disk.

Once all up and running again go to "Keywords" and type in "Radio@AOL" Work it out yourself from there. Still no AOL Radio?
Phone the Samaritans !!!!

How or where can i download the latest Ultravox ActiveX Control .AOL is saying i need the latest file to use AOL radio.THANKS

I like aol radio. At this time I have typed in aol radio dil twice and it still hasn't re-installed itself. Now what?

Posted by: Mishelle on March 19, 2004 08:32 AM

If you get the "You need to download Ultravox active-x blah blah" its because you have deleted the folder on your hard drive c:/programfiles/Nullsoft or files in it.
Uninstall AOL, then reinstall it.

Yes Denise, people are reading these comments.
The question is - are you?
You have made a comment, not asked a question.

BT Broadband may be looking sweet from where you are standing, but not so for people living in the States or Canada.

BT Broadband may indeed be sweet but you will not get AOL Radio on it. What exactly is the point of your comment?
Why did you give a false e mail address?

Posted by: JONNO on March 28, 2004 06:27 PM

Forget about radio aol...go to www.radio@netscape.com its just as good if not better and the best part is .."NO PROBLEMS"..

I have the same "cant get past stage 2, for me thats the open page. Called aol twice, they are making THAT REPORT. we all know about THAT REPORT. I think its in someones recycle bin.I was even told it was windows problem. I said aol radio doest work, not windows. I was told to uninstall aol and go get a aol cd somewhere! My friend lost hers the same day on 8.0 as mine on 9.0. After many hours, and frustrations, I too, became a Netscape radio user. Its not worth the aggravation.

Posted by: tammy on March 30, 2004 07:57 PM

Where is this update for the AOL radio? I called Aol 5X and still have gotten nowhere. I cannot understand such bad accents and get put on hold - ed

Posted by: ed on April 3, 2004 10:38 AM

Yet another false e mail address from "ED"
Obviously doesn't want anyone to e mail him and tell him how to get AOL Radio.

Did he have trouble understanding AOL ? or perhaps they too couldn't work out his e mail address. (Perhaps you typed it in in the wrong accent Ed)

Full instructions are as above in this forum.
Uninstall AOL from your PC. Re-install. (preferably AOL 8 from disc) Once Installed,
Click on AOL radio or choose "Keyword Radio"
A file called "Radio ukpr zip" will download to your computer. You now have AOL radio.

Never mind Wesley. Just read comments and advice by Tom Collins or Jonno above and it will all work for you dear. I am just a poor "woman", have only had a computer for three months and have been able to get AOL radio working all by my little old self following the advice given. There must be some right "Plonks" about out there who must have trouble turning on a light switch without contacting their Internet Service Provider !!!!!!!

where do i download ultravox activex?

Posted by: jason on April 9, 2004 11:38 AM

to disable the auto start, launch the radio, then click radio setup and then startup settings. Make sure the box is not checked.

As for the activeX thing...AOL sucks for not providing any support for this stupid thing. I think it's only a problem with XP. I have NT and it works for me.

Well thats another three people who like to see what they have written go to print out there in the big wide world of the internet. A bit sad really isn't it?
Well as Andy Warhol once said "Everybody should enjoy 15 minutes of fame in their lifetime"
Now that I know that AOL 8 comes with a massage I might just try to download that. I have cracked the "Radio" thing and I hope it has helped a few of you. The massage? - Well your on your own folks.

You need to download ultravox active x control...! Mmm well it used to work so I know thats crap...! I had a look at my firewall settings (Zonealarm) and found I had enabled mobile code control. I switched code control off and the message vanished and the radio loaded. I switched mobile code back on and the message you need utravox active x was back.. check your mobile code control is off and it should work ok.
Hope this helps some peps...! have a nice day all

I am running Window XP and McAfee software,

I would like if anyone could maybe help be able to listen to the radio or get the darn thing to work I would really like the help.

I have contacted tech services with the sweet aol and they told me to call the Dell services and nothing happen there either so neither one has been able to help me.

Jeff's comments above will fix the ActiveX control problem so many people are having-- I just did it too-- what you need to know is that you have to type "Ctrl K" to get to a keyword or select 'Go to Keyword' under the 'Keyword' menu in AOL 9.

But I do agree that AOL customer service agents probably know less than anyone who found this site. Too bad

But AOL radio is pretty great--

I changed a few settings in zonealarm a few days ago and ever since aol radio wouldn't work. I am using AOL9.0. However, the radio shouldn't start itself when u sign on. I cant help you with that problem.

Posted by: pinky on June 18, 2004 12:03 AM

SOLVED!!! I went through 5 online techs and 6 phone techs and tried EVERYTHING -- uninstall/reinstall AOL adapter, Radio DIL, ActiveX issues,... even bought an expensive registry fix program and NOTHING. Radio@aol would NOT work! Would NOT LOAD past Step 3. I followed every suggestion and step by step posted here and NOTHING solved my stupid radio problem.

I SOLVED it by UNINSTALLING EVERY SINGLE AOL program on my computer, got an AOL 9.0 Optimized CD from Best Buy and reinstalled from CD. LOW AND BEHOLD----- IT IS FIXED!! Every feature works great.

Face it, AOL tech support SUCKS in the biggest way possible. They don't know their own product (the blame is ALWAYS someone else!!) and they certainly DON'T know how to do more than the most basic issues related to computing. It is pathetic.

Yes, I could leave AOL, but I like some of the interfaces and it is just plain easy,.... most of the time. I loved my AOL radio... it kept me company while working,.... glad I figured out how to get it back.

Posted by: Dee on June 20, 2004 05:41 PM

Yes, but how can you get it working if you don't use AOL? I have the plain Radio@Netscape program, and it sticks at step 3 like it did with everyone else here. How can I fix it if I am don't have AOL itself installed? That doesn't appear to be a requirement to run it.

If you are running Zone Alarm, AOL Radio will not get passed. If ZA is active, you get the message Ultravox ActiveX Control is out of date. I tried every fix including reinstalling AOL to NO avail. I got around the problem by shutting down Zone Alarm, sign on to AOL, go to radio and select the music you want, then when it comes on turn ZA back on. It's a round about way to fix it but the only way I could solve the proble. I'm open to ideas.

Hi, all

I had the problem of AOL Radio hanging at step 3; spent most of yesterday on the phone with a very knowledgeable Beta tech support person (her whole team got involved), to no avail. (This was immediately after the installation of XP SP2.)

I decided to try one more thing, so today I restored my computer to a day when AOL Radio worked fine. I have the radio again with no problems; however, the restore took away my SP2, and I have not yet reinstalled it, so I don't know whether it will cause the same problem again.

For those who don't know -- restore the computer by going to start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. It will show you a calendar; the darker days are restore points. Pick one when you know the radio was working and go for it. This will NOT remove any saved files, etc, and is reversible if you decide it was the wrong thing to do.

Good luck
Doris

Apparently, I am not the only one who can't get RadioAOL. I tried using the phone tech support and got no resolution to the problem. I tried the e-mail support and the AOL tech reps kept telling me to do the same things over and over again. Don't they look back at a subscriber's problem before sending the same so-called resolution? Then I tried their "Chat" support and after an hour, the tech rep said that my problem would be referred to the "administrators." That was four days ago and I'm still waiting for their reply. I hope someone at AOL reads these postings but my next action will be snail mail to the CEO and possibly a change of ISP.

and then open it in AOL.

it may download a file and you may then get an error - chose abort if you do.

exit AOL

go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\

delete the Nullsoft folder

go to the start button, then search (or find)

search for radio@aol16

open the radio@aol16 folder once it's found

run radio.exe

I solved the problem where you can't get past step 2. If you have any type of security service or ad blocking service that is the problem. If you have a security program like Norton internet security, you have to disable ad blocking or if you have ad blocking software you have to turn it off or disable it. Hope i helped.
