Polycom, Edgewater team on firewall/NAT appliance
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 11/24/04
Videoconferencing users know what a pain it is to connect with users outside the firewall or those using NAT. Polycom has teamed with Edgewater Networks to add firewall/NAT traversal for videoconferencing capabilities to Edgewater's line of EdgeMarc application gateway appliances. Network administrators can put these units in front of a firewall to help pass H.323 traffic (including People+Content/H.239 and encryption) securely through the firewall. The only configuration changes that need to be made are on the firewall, not the individual endpoints.
Working with Edgewater is a good move for Polycom. Previously, Ridgeway Systems was the Switzerland of videoconferencing, offering firewall/NAT devices for all. But their business failed and the technology was scooped up by Tandberg, Polycom's arch rival. Tandberg is putting the Ridgeway technology in its endpoint software, an upgrade that will be available early next year. Now Polycom has an option for customers without losing them to the competition.
EdgeMarc appliances range in price from $1,000 to $23,000, depending on capacity.
