Got TiVo To Go!
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 01/10/05
Well, last week I wrote that Tivo To Go is a go, but that it would be a few weeks before I probably had the update on my machine. Wrong! Got it Friday. A nice surprise when I saw the "You have a new message" icon in the setup menu.
So far so good. I downloaded the latest TiVo Desktop software and gave it a whirl, copying the World Series Game 4 and the Super Bowl to my PC. The downside is the TiVo is connected to my home network via 802.11b - the only protocol supported by TiVo at the moment - so it took nearly 6 hours to copy one of the files. I need to switch it over to the wired network to make things faster, but that requires a USB Ethernet adapter, which I don't have at the moment.
That's as far as I've gotten to date. Ultimately, I want to burn the two to DVD for archiving, but that requires an updated MyDVD from Sonic, which hopefully we be out later this week. You can watch them locally with an upgraded DVD codec for Windows Media Player. The codecs are about $15 a piece, but I am waiting to to buy MyDVD outright in hopes to get the codec included.
