Customizing Squeeze
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 01/25/05
I use Sorenson Squeeze to encode the master WAV file for Radio into the three formats we stream each week. The problem is -- and this is nitpicky -- that each time I had to load the master file and then go through the tree of formats and presets to find the three I use regularly (two original presets for Real and MP3, one slightly customized preset for Windows Media). There is no way to create a separate branch into the preset tree with the three "leaves" underneath to make applying it to the job easy. I asked Sorenson if there's a workaround for this. Here's what they came up with:
Before adding the video file you are compressing drop the 3 compression presets into the empty job window. When you have just the 3 compression settings listed under the job go to the top of squeeze to file and save project. Once you have saved the project you can pull it into squeeze at any time. Let me warn you though, after you have added the video and compressed it and you go to close squeeze it is going to ask if you want to save the changes made to this project , say no. The reason is because Squeeze gets confused if you try to re-open a project that had files or folders that are missing. So if you did choose yes the next time you try to open that project it is going to be looking for the files that were there the last time squeeze was saved, and most likely those will have been moved by this time(ie the files you just exported). So essentially you will want to keep this saved project with just the 3 presets you are wanting. You can import back in these project layouts by clicking file and open project.
It works! Just remember to hit "No" when asked to save the project after you finish the encoding cycle. Now, if they could only add a feature for adding meta information to the media files.
