Akamai adds Flash video capability
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 03/01/05
Following competitors Speedera* and Mirror Image, Akamai last week began offering Flash video streaming services from its global network. While it's a keep-up-with-the-competition checklist item for Akamai, it's another notch in Macromedia's belt as the company takes on the likes of Microsoft, Apple and RealNetworks in battle of streaming video. The one advantage that Macromedia has over the other formats is that you can use FlashPlayer, which 98% of computers already have installed on them. There's no dedicated player that has all kinds of ads, bells and whistles. The downside is the codec they're using is not quite up to snuff with the others, but give it time.
(* = Full disclosure: Network World uses Speedera for its streaming media hosting.)
