Akamai scoops up Speedera
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 03/16/05
As the saying goes, "If you can beat 'em, join 'em." Akamai and Speedera are doing just that, settling legal differences and joining forces, with Akamai shelling out roughly $130 million for its one time rival. The move leaves two major players in the streaming media space, the merged Akamai/Speedera and Mirror Image, plus a number of smaller outfits like Vital Stream.
Network World is a current Speedera customer and former Akamai customer. My worry from an end user perspective is that Akamai will force "akamaization" on Speedera users when it comes to URL construction, a major pain. With Speedera, I just use their SpeedEye Web interface to grab the correct URL for my streaming file, drop it an meta file (be it an ASX or RAM file) and upload it. No need to run weird DOS-based scripts with a hundred attributes. I'm a happy Speedera customer and I hope our level of service remains the same in the merged company.
