The softphone experiment: Take 2
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 04/04/05
In our first try at using the Avaya Softphone for telecommuting, we ran into problems with our browser-based content management system, making life difficult. I thought it was the end of the softphone. However, I think we've solved the problem. Avaya has the option of integration with Internet Explorer, so that any phone number that appears on a Web page is highlighted and clickable for dialing. That little integration technique seems to be what conflicted with our CMS interface. Turning off the IE integration option made everything run smoothly. Even the call quality remained good while performing tasks inside the CMS and other Web-based activities.
Now the experiment is back on. I even use the softphone in the office for longer conference calls since I can use a headset instead of holding the traditional phone handset for extended periods. (I never got my phone headset working properly...) It's going to take some time getting used to answering unscheduled calls via the PC (and remember to put my headset on so I can hear them, they can hear me), but I hope and think it will work out.
