Macromedia and Adobe
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 04/19/05
I was a little surprised when I saw this news yesterday when I got back from lunch: Adobe is spending $3.6 billion in stock to acquire Macromedia. After a night to sleep on it, I think it could be a good thing going forward (though not for the people who will inevitably be laid off as a result of the merger.) Adobe makes products for still imaging and print., as well as PDF document format. Macromedia has Flash and its animation tools, as well as ColdFusion, which it acquired when it scooped up Allaire. There's not a lot of overlap in the product lines, so there should be a good fit. I don't know a lot about Adobe internally, but I hope the acquisition doesn't take away from the innovation of Macromedia.
