Going low-tech
By Jason Meserve, NetworkWorld.com, 06/02/05
Today's Boston Globe reports on a group of teenagers that went with out cellphones and computers for a week to see how life without "instant" communication would be. Interestingly, the kids missed the cellphones more than the PCs, with the loss of IM and e-mail being more of a minor inconvenience.
For me, the experience would be reverse. A cell is great, but I can do without it. I barely use text messaging and the phone itself I mainly use to keep in touch with home during the commute. Take away my PC (or just the e-mail and IM part) and I am screwed. It's probably because those of us with desk jobs are much more reliant on PC-based communication than a teen driving around town looking for something do on a long weekend. Of course, my upcoming week at York Beach without both is pure heaven, but that's just a brief respite to recharge the (human!) batteries.
