What is Sony IVE?

Sony this week took a bigger plunge into the videoconferencing market place with IVE (pronounced like the plant that grows on the walls of Wrigley Field), a new branded videoconferencing service that the company is white labeling from Glowpoint. IVE, which stands for Instant Video Everywhere, is the Glowpoint service with the Sony name attached to it. There reselling the full QoS version that includes dedicated broadband access, video mail and operator assistance. But instead of "Welcome to Glowpoint" users get "Welcome to Sony IVE".
But there are a couple of cool wrinkles. First, there's a bring-your-own-access (BYOA) offering called IVE Mobile for business users that will cost somewhere between $35 and $50 a month, depending on the length of contract signed. What you get is a SIP-based software client and 10-digit phone number for people to reach you. They don't need to know your IP address, which can change depending on what network your connected to (home, hotel, Starbucks etc.). And people with voice lines can reach you as well. There's even some basic NAT/firewall traversal technology built in to get around issues typically encountered at a hotel or on a home network, though more restrictive corporate firewalls can still be a nuisance. With the monthly BYOA service, you get unlimited calling, which goes out over the Internet and into the Glowpoint network, where it's bridged to the H.323 world. You can call any IP or ISDN (there may be additional charges for calls to ISDN) endpoint. Mobile will officially be released June 15.
