Adobe announced early this week that it is updating its AlterCast product and renaming it the Adobe Graphics Server 2.0. The new release, due out at the end of the year, supports both print and online workflows. The image server can be used to take the tedium out of creating multiple versions of the same image for print and online use. An because it is Adobe, the software includes the libraries and engines from Photoshop and Illustrator, making it easy to export a high-res version of an image from one of those formats to the Web and print.
New in 2.0 is support for EPS and PDF format support as well as an SVG to PDF conversion capability. Adobe also has a new metadata standard based on XML called XMP. The language, which is compatible with industry standards such as IPTC (newspapers) and EXIF (digital cameras), collects information about the image that is stored and kept updated by the server and exported to external sources as well.
Pricing for the Adobe Graphics Server 2.0 starts at $7500 per CPU. The software runs on Solaris, Windows NT and 2000.
