Hewlett-Packard and NTT DoCoMo are touting a prototype content delivery network (warning: press release) they've built for the wireless world. It turns out that wireless streaming media is plagued by the same problems as the wired world - slow and quality consistency issues, especially when it comes to delivering to the masses. To remedy the problem the two companies are developing what they call the Mobile Streaming Media-Content Delivery Network (MSM-CDN) that is supposed to push content closer to the end user and provide a more consistent stream. The MSM-CDN will also be able to adapt on the fly to changing network conditions and tailor content delivery based on popularity.
Sound like a familiar concept? The Akamais and Digital Islands (now Cable & Wireless) of the world have been fighting over this for years. Hopefully, HP and NTT DoCoMo get their patent lawyers involved early to avoid future litigation.
