Did you know Viewpoint Media Player is installed on the machines 55.7% of U.S. Web users? (That's a deeper market penetration than Flash, according to a company press release). Have you ever heard of the Viewpoint Media Player?

My guess is you answered 'no' to both questions. So what is this popular player? It's really a tool for delivering rich media advertising to Web users. The study, done by Ipsos-NPD, doesn't mention the fact that about the only thing the player is used for is annoying advertising. The best part is this quote from the release by Sree Kotay, executive vice president of marketing for Viewpoint:

While every other form of rich media requires additional user downloads when new versions of their software become available, Viewpoint Media Player seamlessly auto-updates, making it the most maintenance-free form of interactive graphics delivery.

Great, so I don't even know it's being installed? Isn't that peachy.

So if you're interested in multimedia design and development, the old standbys Flash, Real, Windows Media and QuickTime are still your best bets.

Best I can tell, this software is installed as a part of AOL Instant Messenger (probably for ad delivery).
