Unless you've been living in a Internet-free zone and/or China, you must have seen at least one pop-up ad for the X10 wireless cameras. We here at Fusion central have given the Ninja Pan 'N Tilt Camera a test run for our upcoming Cool Tools Gift Guide scheduled to run in November. While I won't give away all the details, I can tell you the picture quality is not quite as good as those Peeping Tom-esque X10 ads might lead you to believe. Check out this image I took of myself in a room that was lit well enough for a human to do work.
Back to The Multimedia ExchangeI just ordered this camera, but it hasen't come yet.
At first I thought it was to good to be true, that there was a mini wireless video camera selling for only $80, but now after falling for all the ad's I look at the reviews and think that I've made the wrong choice.
I just recieved my x10 camera and was greatly disappointed in the video quality was nothing like the ads lead you to believe, low light video is zero ... only a good picture in sunlight and they always seem to be out of focus even when spending much time trying to focus this thing .... DONT BUY IT
Posted by: Michael on September 24, 2003 11:12 PMI got the x-10 camera because we needed it to help us see who is around the house at nite. What a peice of junk. All the wires you have all the battries you have to have. And we could never get a picture to come through. We could not get the remote to program to run the vcr. Just the tv took for ever. We never got one picture from it. It was way to much to hook up for such a little thing.
Posted by: Charlie on January 11, 2004 07:33 PMI am a X10 installer and i will tell you flat out this stuff is junk. I feel like there deceptive marketing methods borderline illeagal, for example not selling you software that you need for your hardware to work as they claim. Oh, dont get me wrong theyll give you some crappy software that the password doesnt even matter on but if you want to get the real software you have to buy. Well let me go ahead and tell you dont. I have bought this for customers and am yet to have a person happy with any of the x10 video product line. I posted a installer review to warn my customers that these cameras were not up to the quality claimed and of course they decided they would leave that review off. I could go on and on. The motion detectors dont turn off cameras correctly so youll have 2 and 3 cameras on at the same time scrambling each others pictures, anybody with a $25 reciever can hijack your signal which makes these systems a horrible idea for security purposes, and the pan and tilt software never worked properly for me even after complicated port forwarding through routers and what seem to be unnecessary connections to X10 so they could tell me it was ok to use my equiptment. Anybody with any other thoughts on X10 keep on thinking your way to another product or youll be working on the neverending never correct surveillance system. Anyone with suggestions on how to improve these systems I would love to hear how and so would alot of my customrs.
Posted by: Stephen Goble on January 28, 2004 05:18 PMWhat a junk. I just purchased 2 cameras. The video quality is poor, not to mention the lighting problem. I can hardly see my livingroom, and it was lit by a 200 watts halogen bulb. DO NOT BUY.
Posted by: Joseph Ayoub on February 1, 2004 01:57 AMI bought the x10 three floodlight camera system for my computer. The software never loaded right on THREE different computers. Then there was a bad USB converter, one of the cameras flat stopped working, but the motion detector on it worked enough to kick on and send out a signal that killed the signals from the other two. Then after that the transceiver module cratered in. They have sent replacements, and let me turn in all the computer interfacing and get VCR/TV connections. Picture is ok if you just want to see if someone is around in broad daylight, and the VCR commander doesn't always start my VCR when motion is detected or turn off the other cameras, so I don't always get a record of which neighborhood brat ran thru my flowerbeds, because the thing didn't start, or two cameras were running at the same time jumbling the signal. They didn't say anything about NOT seeing thru walls or if it had to see through 3 walls, so the cam in the back is almost usless, unless I buy an $88 transmitter/receiver to put inside and relay the signal...The only reliable way to view all cameras is to sit there and manually scan on and off thru each camera with the vcr running moving the antenna around as needed. It serves its purpose for my use, but wouldn't recommend it if you were relying on this to document a robbery or burglary or vandalism or anything else that might need a clear face image ...
Posted by: Bob on February 20, 2004 04:23 PMI bought about 15 of these X10 cameras to use for warehouse surveillance. I started with 3 and they seemed to work fairly well. So then I bought nore. It was then that we discovered the limitation. At 25-50 feet they were not too bad. As soon as there was steel shelving, brick balls, wood door, etc they went haywire. 100'? Forget it. 60'? Donlt bother. Flipping from camera to camera? You would have a better chance of finding an ice cube on a hot day in the desert sun. Support from X10? Useless or non-existant. I finally asked if they could tell me how to simply hard wire the cameras. Haven't heard from them since, except to try to sell me more of this junk. Anybody out there want a great deal on some used X10 equipment? Make an offer.
Posted by: Lyon Kunin on March 18, 2004 05:36 PMStephen Goble - please contact me if you still want to hook up. I have some ideas and a little bit of X10 systems integration experience. Maybe we can make some money by publishing better instructions (haha). In all honesty, I think that X10's hardware offerings are a great value if you can ignore the slimy sales pitches...
