A new version of a must-have streaming media tool is available: Discreet's Cleaner 6. For those that don't know Cleaner, it can take in virtually any high-quality audio/video format and output it into Real, Microsoft, QuickTime, MPEG and more. The software can batch video jobs to create multiple versions of the same content without user interaction. I use Cleaner 5 and love it.
Version 6 adds support for Kinoma, a downloadable video format for handhelds, as well as MPEG 4 support via the QuickTime 6 codecs. There's also a new 2-pass variable bit rate encoding option for MPEG2, the standard for creating DVDs. Discreet, which bought the product from Media 100, has also added a "Watch Folders" option for encoding across a network.
Currently, Cleaner 6 is only available on the Macintosh. Discreet says a Windows version will be out in early 2003. A new copy of Cleaner 6 is priced at $599. Those upgrading from a previous version only shell out $179.
