Network World Fusion 10/17/02

Multimedia aficionados will appreciate the news out of World PC Expo that Pioneer is developing an audio/video server for viewing and listening to digital media via a television. The DL-1000 server runs on Linux and comes with an 80 gigabyte harddrive. Users can connect it to their home network for transferring media files to the server (copying off the server will be prohibited by copy protection schemes.) Media can also be pulled from a custom version of Yahoo's Launch media service.

For those that want to view the server's content on more than one television in the house, Pioneer is developing less-expensive "client" devices. Currently, plans are for the DL-1000 to support MPEG2, MPEG4 and Windows Media 8 formats when the server debuts in 2003. Pioneer says it will support Windows Media 9 in 2004, at which time Windows Media 11 or its equivalent should be out. Pricing details are not yet available.
