AOL builds own streaming tech

Network World Fusion 11/19/02

The biggest ISP of them all, AOL, has built its own streaming media technology called Ultravox. The new technology is being used to stream CD-quality audio via the company's new Broadband Radio@AOL offering.

Up until now, AOL had been using RealNetworks format exclusively. The company is still using the format for to serve dial-up users and on the Netscape Web site. It will be interesting to see if Ultravox ultimately pushes Real completely out of the AOL picture and/or becomes yet another format option to compete with Real, Windows Media, QuickTime and MPEG.

Posted by: Simon Chan on November 26, 2003 07:22 PM

Yeah, hey wuts up? Just click on the AOL Keyword button, and type in "Radio DIL" and you'll be set. At least I did that with mine and it's working fine now.

THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME ULTRAVOX ACTIVE CONTROL, by typing in "Radio DIL", without the quotation marks, it works. MY RADIO AOL IS NOW WORKIN JUST FINE>..

Posted by: carlo on November 28, 2003 01:53 PM

Well, I used Radio DIL and no luck! Mine keeps saying that my security won't allow ActiveX, then again it says sec. won't allow Ultravox ActiveX - otherwise the page wouldn't be complete. I've been trying for about two weeks to find the answer, but no-one seems to know anything. It does affect a goodly number of other programs as well.
Jonathan, are you working on AOL-8 or 9? Please, someone help me cause my e-mail seems to be blocked out, too.

How do I receive the lastest version of ultravox ACTIVEX

Posted by: Richard Wilke on December 10, 2003 10:37 PM

In order for the Radio DIL to work you must hit the keyword button after putting the Radio DIL in the address bar area for keyword. Make sure that you do not hit the search button or it will not work.

Posted by: Tim on December 12, 2003 06:56 AM

I junked AOL ,9 and now use Version 8. Problem is, I cannot use AOL Radio because I am told I need then "Latest Verion of Unltavox----"

Sorry AOL your version.09 sucks and .08 grooves. Is this our punishment for turing away from your latest AOL version? Hey, I may have to play my stereo..............what a great idea! Why didn't I think of it?

Posted by: Bob HaWKINS on December 13, 2003 01:02 PM

I do not hit search, and I still can not get it to work. How can I get this radio to play or I am leaving AOL

Posted by: Ken on December 14, 2003 09:49 PM

I've tried typing Radio DIL: It gave me a security warning. I've typed in every term I could think of for a search of how I could obtain a copy of the Ultravox ActiveX, no luck. I use 8.0. I have a copy of 9.0, but apparently my computer doesn't like it because it will NEVER finish Downloading the program!!! AOL this sucks!

Posted by: Kel on December 15, 2003 06:07 PM

I put your 9.0 in the garbage and now you messed up my radio in 8.0. I did the Radio DIL thing and it still doesn't work. Maybe it is time to switch to someone else. All 9.0 did was give you more room for your advertising.

Hey, I agree with the majority of everyone, who has downloaded 9.0. It really does stink. It freezes up my computer and everytime I logged on there was always a fix that needed to be downloaded. I did used the "radio dil" and it worked. Thanks for the hook up. This is what I did. I had to dump 9.0 and I back to 8.0.
1. Go to AOL Keyword button on left side next to Channels button.
2. Click on it.
3. Type: Radio DIL
4. Click: Go (button)
It will take a second to download and you should be up.

Good Luck,
Happy Holidays

Anyone have any idea how to get it back - Radio DIL (or Radio DLL)does not work it brings up an AOL search that ends up here.

Guess the real idea is give up Beta testing and AOL and get a decent ISP.

I restored AOL Radio by typing in the keyword:

AOLDIL

(no spaces between the letters)

It loaded up the radio and my music came on in a few seconds.

Thank you

Posted by: Mary at Cynthia's office on January 7, 2004 05:36 PM

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX IT: IF YOU HAD TROUBLE USING THE KEYWORD SEARCH THEN THIS IS THE ALTERNATIVE.
Step 1: click on keyword
Step 2: click keyword list
Step 3: click on the letter "R" in the index
Step 4: click "Radio"

This will open it and play your radio.

I'm running aol 9.0, win xp home, broadband on a home network. aol tech support was useless.
finally i tried the following...

Go to control panel > internet options > connections > LAN settings (Bottom right) > check Automatically detect settings. I signed off and then signed on to find the aol radio works!

Good luck! IndiaOnLine tech support has no idea how to solve this issue if the Radio Dil doesn't help.

I have been using AOL 9 since it came out but for the last month an a half I
have been having a problem with AOL that no one at AOL seems able to solve.
When I try to listen to AOL radio I get the following Error Message:You do not
have the latest version of Ultravox ActiveX control. Please download the latest
version to make Radio@AOL run properly. Well, I have downloaded the latest
version but still get the the same error message and no radio. At the same time
your Automatic computer fixer does not work. It sends an error meeeage that
says this version of AOL does not contact the internet.
I have spent many hours on the phone with AOL Techs. and the best they can do
is file a report to their superiors. To say the least I'm fed up with all the
problems I have an am considering another internet provider. I have been with
AOL sinced 2000 and have been pleased with your service up till now. I
thought I would give you one more chance to make things right.
For your own information their are several web sites out there devoted to the
Ultravox ActiveX problem with hundreds of writers, so I'm quite aware that
I'm not the only one with this problem. Most of the Techs I have talked with
were not aware of this or tried to tell me it was a Windows problem.
It is hoped that this email will reach someone who knows what they are
talking about and will be able to solve this problem.

Well after weeks of un-installs , re-installs of 9.0 and doing the radio dil thing in keyword, I now have a working radio , but still can't get the video to work , aol tech's (lack for a better word) have never in the 5 years I been a aol customer fix anything or had a answer to any of my problems , The calls go the same everytime , I state the problem , they tell me to click this and that to end up saying I don't know then ask if I mind being trans to a sales person to try to sale me some other aol junk , Come on aol get some real techs , And if your techs don't have a answer to a customer problem mytbe thats not the right time to try to sale them something else . my new problem is this when I try to open a aol video is says it downloading the new files I need to log off aol re-opens , a window pops up saying click here then says(error opening file nullsoft\activex\ampx.dll) NO aol tech has a clue what is wrong (AGAIN!!!!!)THanks for the 45 minutes of waste of time Bob the tech. Do any one here visiting this board have any ideas? A big thanks to anyoone who might be able to help.....

All,

We are paying for services we are not receiving. I would like to suggest that we all call AOL and ask for a reimbursement. If we were all to do this on the same day, say April 1st, perhaps AOL will eliminate THEIR problem and stop asking that we solve it for them. It was bad enough not being able to use the radio, but now I can't access video. Crikey!!

Posted by: Louis Cypher on March 19, 2004 03:50 PM

I think Louis is right , I remember when I had a cable channel down for weeks I got credit for that lost , and AOL should do the same, since so many of us are having the same problem its clear its not us , it them . All I want is a fix if there is a problem with a dll or exe file Then there should be a way to download what you need to fix the problem , spending time on the net looking for ways to fix something AOL changed from a working format is not what I pay for , I would like my video to work again its been 3 weeks now I have got this ampx error , everything was working just fine when it was in the real player format, So AOl fix the problem and then leave it alone !!!!

Posted by: king on March 24, 2004 01:42 AM

I too cannot play the videos on AOL 9.0, the radio works fine but when trying to watch a music video I get the "AOL has to reboot...." message thing....any more ideas please post!!!!!
Thanks and much appreciated!

Posted by: Brian on March 27, 2004 12:57 PM

I'm glad to see I'm not the only critter with this ampx.dll problem. I believe that AOL doesn't recognize they have a streaming audio fragility. I've "radio dil", delted the "Nullsoft" folder, "Quick restore"d, replaced AOL ... and still "error opening ampx.dll file for writing".

If it's only the radio feature that is boned ... I don't really care. Neither does AOL.

Posted by: Jim on April 14, 2004 04:12 PM

Ok, so after re-installing AOL, downloading all these service packs and playing with firewalls I fixed my ActiveX problem! Hopefully I can help some of you because I know I love my AOL radio/video, also! I found without notification my Ultravox ActiveX was always there but AOL thought I needed to update. It is apparently a file automatically blocked by the firewall without any notification if I wanted it to even access the internet. The file on my computer (XP) is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nullsoft\ActiveX\AOLMediaPlaybackControl.exe. You need this file to not be blocked by the firewall. Manually add it to your firewall program as a program that can have access to the internet. Hope I help some of you - Good Luck!!

If anyone knows of a fix for this please let me know, Thanks.

Posted by: JRAltd on April 19, 2004 05:21 PM

ok for some of you ampx.dll problems here is what iv had to do may work for you it worked for me aol does know and dont let them lie to you the problem started 3-15-2004 if have xp here.reinstall windows redo partition if have lexmark printer let windows install the part for the usb, then if have works install that finaly install aol leave off aol antivirus software gointo ,programfiles,commonfiles,nulsoft/activex there will be a file named ampx.dll dated 9-24-2003 and thats the right way it should be once you put norton or macafee on and reboot aol sever cant see you have ampx.dll dated 9-24-2003 so it sends you a new directory under activex called 2.0 its a duplicate of directx but it cancels out the right ampx.dll by puting the incompatable vertion of ampx.dll in activex and the good one in 2.0 now aols server cant find the file it needs to run the videos so you get cant right to ampx well its more confusing and a headace to get aol to fix it !!! another way is go into ie,delet cookies, delete offline content, securty set to defualts, connections automatic detect my network settings but one thing dont hit restore it will restore the ampx problem when it resets your network settings i perfer the first approch it remove all dout it might come up one time after this just do what it says and it should never ask again thank you

Posted by: john on April 19, 2004 09:29 PM

ok this is also related to ampx.dll problem when the problem first started i checked the reversions that were on there server at the time ? i have reversion 41485107 and thay are running 41485106 and thay wont us to be compatable with them how did we get the lastest vertion out there and there running a vertion behind us point were be droped old files by the server when we already have them on disk not a fix but very much the truth for those out there that dont know about it thank you i will keep hounding aol intil thay fix it for us i have the rest of my life and the money to back it

Posted by: john on April 19, 2004 09:42 PM

related to ampx.dll problem remember redo your whole computer install all hardware first dont attempt to install aol at all intil all your hardware is installed first.that is part of the trick the reason i have so much to say about how to stop this problem is cause it is a script code erro and for some reason when macafee crashed that day on 3-15-2004 it messed with aol or viseversa and niether party wants to work with each other ( remember macafee had trouble with there activex controls for two days )well your computer needs activex to run windows now thats all im saying anymore remember im the on workin with a software engineer to find a cure thank you
and for those it works for you are very much welcome.

Posted by: john on April 25, 2004 08:51 AM

Hi John I have done EVERYTHING you have posted and still no luck . The download of the new dil happens but still nothing , the player it self does not open it just a blank page , but if I paste the url into IE the player loads but no video , I know it for AOL only but just seems weird that the player open in IE and won't in THe AOL browser. I use Zone as my fire wall and everything seems fine there I even turned it off and still no luck on the video, So I ruled out firewall problems, You been a great help (only help) in this matter and seem to know your stuff, But for the life of me I can't figure this out and its getting to me, Even new problems with the radio is happening I have to tyoe Radio dil everytime to use it, and never had to do that before once seem to fix it before. Is there any more idea's you may have ? if you need more info on my problem just ask, I am sure problems differ from pc to pc but would love to put this problem behind me , Thank u

... I'm trying to use this on a network with a Border Manager Firewall. We can open ports and URLs, but not .EXEs. Any thoughts on this?

Posted by: David on April 30, 2004 01:08 PM

Hi I just found out some of the problems I been having with video not playing in aol and the actionx error's was because of my spyware blocker was blocking the cookies/url's that needed to play the video, I restored/unblocked it and everything works great, everytime I click to watch a video from aol-tv and run my spyware prrogram I notice its picking up (what ever it loads to play the video) as spyware, this might help some of you fit the problems you are having,

Posted by: KING on May 6, 2004 01:44 AM

I'd thought that perhaps Spyware could be the problem, but AOL assured me it was not. I unchecked any Spyware that was being blocked that I thought might be related to the Nullsoft Active X error message, but none of the entries looked plausible. I'm using Spybot 1.2 and Spyware Blaster 3.1. Can you tell me what exactly you did, step by step? Please type slowly as I can't read very fast ;) Thanks man, Shinolah

Posted by: Louis Cypher on May 6, 2004 02:08 PM

I also have spybot, but heres the deal , I was forced to reload xp do to some virus's , so I had a working copy of the aol video with the new load, after a few hours of surfing the net I realize I had no spy/adware program running, Thats how I notice that after blocking what spybot found aol video stoped working, by then I had over 185 ad/spyware links/cookies , so I just unblocked all and the video worked again, I am now blocking one at a time checking to see which one it is that cause the problem, all I can tell you is what I have left still running. (DSO EXPLOIT DATA SOURCE). THERES LIKE 10 OF THEM ALL HAVE DIFFERENT REG LOCATIONS.(DOUBLE CLICK @ FAST CLICK) THEY ARE LISTED AS FILES. and that about it. you will have to look in the recover part of your spybot to unblock those to see if it works for ya , or recover all like I did , but chances are you have a ton stuff blocked, good luck. when YOU try the video again after unblocking , and if you still get a error, click the inore and let aol close and reopen , it may load what you need to run the video,

thanks for your help, if you help.

Posted by: stephanie on May 27, 2004 03:58 PM

For those of you having trouble viewing music videos through AOL because of the "Nullsoft ActiveX error opening file for writing" problem: until this gets resolved by AOL, you can go to the same identical AOL Music page by opening Internet Explorer and going to http://music.channel.aol.com and clicking on the videos from that page. Clicking on a music video link will open a new Internet Explorer window which will ask if you are using dial-up or broadband, and then after that, another window will open up identical to the AOL software's music video window, and the video you requested will play. It worked for me.

For "broadband members only" videos, like the recent Avril Lavigne concert, you can log on using your AOL screen name and password at aol.com, and you will be able to watch the concert from there.

Good luck.

If you are trying to fix the AOL radio files, make sure you reboot your computer, sign back on to AOL without opening the radio. If you have autostart on your AOLradio, disable it before rebooting the computer.

Upon reboot and opening AOL back up (again without accessing any of the AOL radio files), then go to kw: radioDIL and it should load them properly.

After this, just click on 'enable' for Download signed Activex controls. Click OK, then OK again to get out of Internet Options. Sign back into AOL, immediately go to KW Radiodll...Radio@AOL starts!!

Posted by: sophia on July 12, 2004 02:05 PM

for those that are having problems viewing video on aol but not with the radio first make sure you
have service pack 2 installed and you are closed out of aol then go to
c:/program files/common files/nullsoft/activex
the right click on the 2.0 folder and delete it
start up aol and sign in then go to keyword video@aol you will see a pop up box (differnt then what you have been getting) saying an update is needed, update, then restart aol, then go back to keyword video@aol and you should see a popup ox in the lower left corner saying the update has been successfully installed and a button to click that says continue click that button you should be able to watch videos now.

Here is the radio@aol fix for anyone who has 7.0.
Go to the start menu, click on my computer, then go to your C: drive, click on program files, then click on America Online 7.0a, then click on the Radio@AOL16 folder, click on Radio. Do this while you are connected to the internet and Radio@AOL will start right up, and work just fine. I personally tried almost everyonelses suggestions, but none of them worked. Thanks for trying guys! So if you have tried all other suggestions and they didn't work, this one should.

Posted by: Keno on August 29, 2004 05:24 PM

I've done every manipulation I could find and managed to at least get the radio to load again. (I'm on 8.0; I had to uninstall 9.0 due to constant freezing.)

Now I always get the message that the station is temporarily unavailable and to try again later, even on the Radio at Netscape. *sigh*

Anybody else run into this problem?

I subscribe to AOL broadband service... I love watching "sessions@aol" (performers singing live) as well as the ability to play artists music videos on demand. The problem is... HOW DO I SAVE THESE TO MY HARD DRIVE to play them later? The same question applies to aol radio. Can anyone help?

Posted by: Dwayne on September 9, 2004 11:17 AM

I have deleted the entire Nullsoft file after downloading SP2 as Robin suggested, but I still get the same error for video. I've also changed the wan mini-port from auto to manual & that didn't work either. Guess I'll have to wait for AOL to fix this problem........unless I switch ISP b4 then. I have this thing about paying for a product & not being able to reap ALL of the benefits.

same trouble w/radio-the easy answer is not to use aol at all, but netscape radio-same thing and it starts at start-up..aol techs did not help
don't bother with them. remember--netscape radio!

I think some of you who are having trouble with this need for THE "more current" version of Ultravox ActiveX Control are getting tripped up on something quite simple. Even though the previous attempts at help have stated entering Radio DIL in the keyword dialog will get it going. My experience is as follows... tupe it in as one word RadioDIL...worked for me! the other way didn't
