Giving Windows Movie Maker 2 a go

Finally had an opportunity to try out Microsoft's Movie Maker 2 software and I am impressed. It's no Adobe Premiere, but for those with a need to do some quick and simple editing this could be a useful tool. I need to put a bunch of GIF images into a timeline and sync them with a narration. (One could do the same thing with photos.) It took more time to download the 11 megabyte file than it did to lay the thing out. And there's a good preview window that does not require the user to render anything. There's a bunch of easy to use transitions and effects. Movie Maker can output to Windows Media format (naturally), DVD and back to a DV camera. The best part, it's free in you've got Windows XP. For streaming, there's a bunch of a different bitrate and file-size options for users to choose from when outputting their finished product.

I found out how to fix that shutdown problem already. Search for this file called "divxaf.ax" and rename it. That should fix the problem. It's a codec clash.

Posted by: eSouL on October 14, 2003 11:02 AM

I really love Movie Maker. It's great and easy to use, but I have been having problems with it lately that I can't find anyone to help me with. I've been trying to save a movie to my computer, and it hasn't been working. It says that I should check to make sure the original files are still there (they are), the saving folder is there (it is), and that there's enough space on my harddrive (there is). So I'm totally lost as to what to do. They only other thing happening is that when I first open my project, it says "checking files" and it keeps saying it's searching for a codec, and then it says it wasn't found. What codec is it talking about and hwo do I get it? If anybody has any answers or know where I can go to get help, please tell me. Thanks.

It's a great fun making movies from my Sony Hi8 videocamera with Windows movie maker 2.
I'm still learning and experimenting, but it is easy to capture and make transitions, titles, music etc. to create a nice holidays movie.

Posted by: nazario on November 10, 2003 08:57 PM

does MM2 alow for individual clip sound ratio setting? I can only seem to set the soundtrack/video sound ratio for the whole project - I'd like to individually set clip sound levels (ie, clip 1 - 100% video audio, clip 2 - 10% video sound, 90% soundtrack etc). Is this possible? It seems to me to be set the same for all clips. Thanks for the advice.

Posted by: Foong Chee Chuen on November 15, 2003 10:10 PM

You can change the volume for each clip by right-clicking on the clip, and adjusting the volume. (Just keep the video/audio sound balance for the whole project in the middle, and then regulate the sound from clip to clip like I mentioned.

After installing Windows Movie Maker 2, I opened the program and as it was updating my collection, I recieved an error and was forced to exit. When I opened the program again, it wouldn't try to complete the collection update and I have found no way to manually make it do so. Because it hasn't updated the collection, I have no video transitions or video effects but the program is workable. Does anyone know if this is fixable? Thanks.

I have pinnacle studio as well as Movie Maker. Movie maker allows me to do more video effects and transitions, since Pinnacle wants me to upgrade. The only thing is, Movie Maker takes FOREVER to save! #$%&!! I'm saving a 40 min. video, and it's taking 240 minutes. On the other hand, Pinnacle seems to take forever to load content, and tends to freeze when working with large movies. Anyone have any suggestions?

I just updated to Movie Maker 2. When I play my video in storybook the audio voice is very very fast. Music does not sound fast just us talking like chipmunks I did slow down to half speed but that doesn't seem right either. Does anyone know how to correct this and why it would sound so fast like that? Any help would be appreciated.

I have completed a movie, using windows movie maker 2 and want to save it to a cd. Every time, I get an error message that it cannot find my cd burner. I tried deleting the burner in safe mode and having the computer reinstall it. But I still get the error. All I want to do is burn my movie onto a cd. Can anyone help?

Posted by: Liz on April 2, 2004 01:59 AM

Ok, I figured out how to get movie maker 2 to recognize my cd burner (go to my computer and right click on the cd-rw, go to properties, go to recording and check the enable box). Now movie maker will begin the burn process, take an hour and then tell me to check to see if the original files are available (they are) see if there is enough room on the disk (there is). I created a slide show to play at my kids banquet and I can't get it off my computer. I would love to burn it to a dvd. Anyone have this problem?????

Movie Maker 2 is a excellent program, except for the little gliches in the program. I'm having great difficulty saving my finished movie to a cd. It gives me a message, "recordable device not found". I have gone to the windows website along with several others but nothing seems to fix the problem.

"THERE IS WIN MOVIE MAKER FOR 98!!! how ignorant can u be? if there is a 2, there must be a 1, right? and i know people who use movie maker 1 so..." ........................

One who asks how ignorant someone else can be, SHOULD be able to find a Movie Maker for 98. At any rate, there is a movie maker 1. Good luck finding it on the net. Oh. And good luck installing it on Windows 98. Windows 98 wasn't the version right before XP and Movie Maker came out with WinME.... after Windows 98.

Posted by: Kim on June 5, 2004 01:55 PM

Windows Movie Maker comes only for XP and Me. It is a system component so even if you somehow copy it on to Windows 98/2000 machine it wont work.

Movie maker 1 was the version that came with win xp and win me. On XP there is an updated version 2 available from windows update. No such thing for Win Me so far.

All people who are having crashing problems when they apply an effect or transition, need to fix their codec conflicts. Go to www.the-kellys.org and locate a program called RenameCodec. Currently it is at http://www.the-kellys.org/utils/rC.exe

Also note that Windows Movie Maker will not save in a format suitable for VCD or DVD, it only saves in dv-avi or microsoft's own format (.wmv). Dont waste your cds or time trying to do that. However once you have made and saved your movie in WMV format you can use some third party software like Sonic My DVD or Nero Vision Express to make your VCD/DVD. These programs will re-encode the exported movie into a dvd or vcd format.

There may be a way...

I have a hunch, I'm not certain of it, but I want to be a CSI vid movie maker, I want it to be my career, so this is very important, and since I'm just 14, I don't know everything about computers, but there may be a way of getting the movie maker on Windows 98

And correct me if i'm wrong, but on the computers at school, they have XP, but they've filtered all downloads and tools like the Movie Maker, BUT we finally worked a way around that, so back at school on monday, I'm going to try it, try and get the movie maker onto the school computers. Now downloading the Maker is not the problem with 98, it gets half way through installing, and decides it doesn't want to bother, so what I'm going to do, is download it and install it on the school computers, transfer it onto a disc, I'm presuming a floppy won't hold it, but that doens' really matter, and fingers crossed, now that it's installed, when I transfer it onto my computer, it will work - voila! (Like i said, this is verty important to me, I can't afford a PC of my own, otherwise I'd have XP and be a champion movie maker a long time ago now!)

I have MM2 on Dell 8300 utilizing XP. I get the video when using the input adapter that came with the computer. I use the RCA jacks for video and audio to send footage from my VHS camcorder to the computer. No audio w/ the video. Dell cant help me. I've scoured the WEB, and no one lists this specific problem when using an input adapter. I have ATI 9000, and utilize ATI rage theater video capture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: rick on June 20, 2004 10:11 AM

Here's a suggestion for your Camcorder problem. DUMP it. It's a relic of past times. Prehistoric.Spend some dosh, cheapskate. Buy a DV camcorder, a Firewire PCI card and never worry about it again. Simple single cable connection, with editting right own to the frame or timecode level..

Posted by: busy bill on July 14, 2004 11:05 PM

are you all so f**king dumb!!!??? u cant load mm2 on any OS othen than XP cuz microsoft a) use it as a marketing ploy to get you to upgrade to XP, why do you think that virtually all new free content from microsoft and third parties such as Intervideos X-Pack which lets you create MP3's and watch DVD's is only available to mp-xp. Its tight fisted of microsoft but for the time being I am going to stick with Win2k-pro, its by far the most stable OS at the moment in my opinion apart from MacOSX or Linux (lindows is a good one). For free video editing, have a look at download.com

ABOUT THAT BURNING A CD THING.....
I've completed my first movie but when I send it to a CD and attempt to watch it my DVD/CD player says "no supported files found".
Any suggestions? It has recorded something on the CD. I've got people lining up to watch this movie and I'm at wits end. I don't want everyone to just sit and watch it at my computer. That would be weird.
If I need to reformat the movie, just how do I do that? Remember, I'm a first-timer... everything is still pretty new to me.
Thanks, all you knowledgeable movie makers!!!

For everyone out there asking about Movie Maker 1 or 2 for 98 and 2000; there is no such thing! lol! They are both ONLY for Windows XP. Darn Microsoft.
