BuyMusic.com good, but not great

Network World Fusion 07/24/03

Following the "cheers and jeers" format used by TV Guide and my local newspaper's editorials, here are by thoughts on the new BuyMusic.com:

Cheers: It's great that Windows folks now have an iTunes equivalent. The system for downloading seems pretty simple (I haven't tried BuyMusic.com yet), the prices are reasonable and the selection wide. I like the idea of just downloading the songs from an album that I want, rather than having to buy the whole album for two or three songs and bunch of filler.

Jeers: For only offering WMA files and no MP3s. Don't get me wrong, I love the quality of Windows Media 9 Series and the compression ratios. My biggest problem is my portable player (an Archos) only supports MP3, so why do I want to purchase music from BuyMusic.com if I can't take it with me?

You should read comments from Jennifer over at ScriptGoddess http://www.scriptygoddess.com/archives/004057.php. Apparently besides having to download and activate each song individually (one at a time for each process); apparently transfering music and successfully burning CDs is having a high failure rate for early adopters. So far BuyMusic.com indicates that they don't have to provide support if you were able to successfully download the music from their site. But I wouldn't want to be in Jennifer's position, who just bought a couple albums and now can't port them anywhere, because the plug-in they require to burn CDs, keeps crashing her computer, and moving the files to a secondary computer ONLY allows her to play the songs.

I just purchased a song from BuyMusic.com: the payment went through fine, but the song just won't download. Other songs in the same order downloaded without a hitch. It's not my computer. So far, customer service is just giving me a runaround. They have no phone access and an e-mail turn around of several hours ... leading to days after 3 messages. At this point, they've got the money. I've got the headache. BuyerBeware.
