Network World Fusion 03/25/04

Ars Technica reports the Fraunhofer Institute is going to add surround sound capability to the venerable MP3 format to better compete with competition from the likes of Ogg Vorbis and Dolby Digital (both multi-channel formats). The Ars Techica post makes a good point in asking why? Most people use MP3 in portable devices with headsets, so the extra surround sound bits are superfluous.
