By Microsoft’s own admission the release last week of Service Pack 1 for Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 was not that big, mostly a rollup of engineering software updates.
It’s the long-term view where this gets interesting because SMS 2003 SP1 is one half of Microsoft’s System Center 2005, which will ship next year.
The other half of System Center 2005 is MOM 2005, which will be generally available on Oct. 1. System Center 2005 is a key piece of Microsoft’s Dynamic Systems Initiative, a plan to build a holistic management platform for the Windows server environment. With pieces falling into place be on the lookout for Microsoft ramping up the hype around its management efforts.
