If you have a big IP telephony or WLAN planned in the near future up, get the scoop on Foundry’s upcoming Power over Ethernet switch, targeted at large installations of IP phones, WLAN access points or other PoE-powered devices.
The FastIron SX series of chassis-based switches, which Foundry is expected to announce in July, can handle up to 192 PoE ports. More important than the high density is the redundancy built into the boxes, Foundry says. The chassis is built with separate power supplies for the switch, and for the PoE modules to power endpoints such as phones and access points. Foundry says its past switches — as most PoE chassis from competitors — share a single power supply between the chassis itself and the PoE modules in the slots. Foundry says its new architecture lets the switch continue forwarding packets if a PoE failure occurs. Buyers of the switch will also have an option for a redundant system and PoE power supplies for an added level of backup. The switch comes in an eight-slot and sixtee-slot chassis.
The box isn’t expected to be shipped until the thrid quarter of 2006, and pricing has not been set for the product yet.
