Happy News from SBC DSL

By James Gaskin, NetworkWorld.com, 01/29/05

Got an e-mail from SBC about my DSL line – they have upgraded my upstream speed to 384k, same as my download speed. I use their "DSL Starter Kit" which means the slowest connection option, mainly because my distance from their nearest central office left me no choice. The original speeds were 384k down and 128k up, so slow as to be an insult to the word broadband, but that's all I could get.

I tested the new service this morning, and my upload speed was 319k – nearly three times faster than before. Oddly, my download speed tested at 207k, nearly half the speed it should be. I guess they had to find the extra bandwidth somewhere, or else this was just the result of speed testing to a server half a continent away.
