IDC's latest report on global spending is an overview of how corporate dollars were invested in everything from security surveillance systems and biometrics to firewalls, authentication, and content management. It also includes business continuity services and equipment, including load-balancing, archiving and RAID, SAN and NAS storage.
According to this metric, worldwide spending on these types of security products reached $64 billion last year, showing 11% growth, and is expected to surpass $118 billion by 2007. Spending was fairly evenly split between services, software and hardware.
As part of the report, IDC also took time to interview about 1,000 IT managers in July, asking them to pinpoint their highest priorities. About 40% rated security as their highest priority, and security spending was said to now equal over 7% of total IT spending in 2002. Other areas of high importance to IT managers were customer-relationship management, Web site management, eBusiness, secure content management, and wireless.
According to the IDC report, some of the areas expected to see substantial growth globally will be in the consulting and implementation services--with about 20% growth expected--and secure content management (which includes Web filtering, anti-spam and anti-virus protection) at 18.8%.
Software-based firewalls may only see 5.8% growth through 2007, but hardware-based firewall/VPNs are expected to do better at 14.6%. For more information about IDC and its reports, you can visit www.idc.com.
