Start-up Mu Security formally takes the wraps off its protocol-based analysis tool this week, the Mu-4000. If it works as expected, it could turn out to be a disruptive force in the network industry.

Mu Security's founders say the name stands for "mutate the protocols" to discover how network equipment subjected to it copes with the twists, turns and distortions of applied attacks. The Mu-4000 appliance simulate attacks this way on a wide variety of network equipment to uncover generally unknown vulnerabilities, and hence the potential for so-called zero-day attacks.

Maybe "Mu" should also stand for "mutilate." If people with bad intentions had the Mu-4000 at their disposal, they might very well gain the knowledge to exploit a lot of networks.

Another disruption could be that vendors in the industry acquire the Mu-4000 to test their competition's equipment for the purposes of one-upsmanship.

Of course, maybe none of this will happen, and in my case, "Mu" should stand for "musings."
