Security and VoIP (separately)

Think you, as a small business, struggle more with security than the large companies? Not according to Execs express top security concerns where Big Dogs shiver from the same nightmares you do. Number one on their list? Unauthorized System Access. Doesn't that sound familiar? Keeping the outsiders on the outside aggravates the Fortune 1000 just like the Fortune 1,000,000.

In fact, the big dogs may have more headaches than you think, even with their bigger budgets. True, small businesses spend more per employee than large companies, but that's because even small companies need certain security setups. And as often as security-challenged employees keep you awake at night, large companies have up to a thousand employees for every one of yours. It's a wonder anyone in the security business can get any rest.

At least you can get a break on your phone system if you switch to a modern VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system. Another nice case study on VoIP, Outsourced VoIP: No headaches, more collaboration, telecommuting covers another angle of the VoIP market from my friend Sandy. I covered a similar story with more of an overview than case study back in February IP telephone systems improve. Check out three case studies I did in this area for CDW's magazine aimed as small businesses in the story titled Voice Lessons: VoIP veterans will help smooth your move to IP telephones. The path is blazed, so feel free to head down that road to more flexible, and less expensive, phone services.

Our friends over at PC World had some fun putting together The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time. I don't agree with some of the selections, but everyone disagrees with a few selections on a Top 25 list for any subject. You can start a bar fight any night you want by making a Top 5 list and belligerently leaving out the local team (or so I've heard).

Throw in your 1/50th of a dollar and tell me what you consider the worst technical product you've struggled against. Be sure and admit, honestly, if you beat the product into submission or threw up your hands in disgust and found an alternative. I'll keep your identity secret if the product remains a sore spot in your company.
