Faster networks are more fun, and more productive, than slower networks. Prices for Gigabit Ethernet gear running at 1,000Mbps used to be outrageous, then expensive, and are now affordable. In fact, they're affordable enough for even small companies to run gigabit connections to desktops that fling lots of files around the network. Hence the good news about new Gigabit Ethernet gear from two vendors, SMC and Asante. Deskop gigabit adapters for under $30 can be found now as well, and new motherboards often include GigE network connectors.
Now that Intel released some new server chips, pricing for earlier models drops. That's good. Pricing for Intel competitors, meaning AMD, drop as well, and those price savings may filter down to us as IBM buys AMD processors for servers. Faster and cheaper always sounds good, right?
In another note about Microsoft "innovation" read here about Microsoft's high performance operating system. The story mentions this product coming from their research labs, but forgets to mention that Novell NetWare had clustering about a decade ago. Better late and all that, right? Especially when the earlier product gets little news coverage.
