Leave it to Apple to take more jabs at Microsoft than all of the Network World columnists combined. Quoting Steve Jobs explaining why he can't give too many details about features in the upcoming Apple OS upgrade: "We don't want our friends in Redmond to start their photocopiers just yet." Mr. Turtleneck strikes again.
Did you catch the details about one feature Jobs did mention, the Time Machine? PC World has a good wrapup, with an explanation of how Time Machine is essentially CDP (Continuous Data Protoction) built into the operating system. After all, if you want to copy each change to a file in your system, who knows better what happens than your OS? All the commercial CDP products have to worm their way into the OS, and Apple now makes that obsolete.
Some will complain if Microsoft adds that feature to Windows Vista, of course, citing the damage to third party backup providers. But Microsoft already includes client backup software; even if it isn't that great, it's there as part of the OS. An improvement in the backup system should be greeted warmly, but you can never tell about those of us "who hate Microsoft" according to some readers. I just can't win.
I will end by quoting Faithful Reader Milan from New Zealand: "Windows is a mid-range product with a mid-range price aimed at middle of the road consumers. So it follows we can't expect great results all the time."
