Everyone can attest to the need for a comprehensive nationwide electronic health record.

Network World wrote about it when Dr. David Brailer announced the initiative in 2004. The Bush administration estimated it would take about 10 years.

Well, a new study in the Journal of the Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA) says it will now take until 2024 to realize this goal. Modern Healthcare wrote about it.

The study blames the lag in adoption on small solo medical practices, which will see little in reimbursements or advantages. Another barrier is concern for vendor volatility -- the vendor that supplies the solution may not be around in 18 years. Only if you subscribe to the JAMIA, will you be able to see the actual study.
