Encrypting data at rest is becoming increasingly important as reports of lost tapes and disks persist.
IBM will start encrypting data on its TS1120 Tape Drive in the second half of this year. Sun is expected to announce encryption for one of its tape libraries next week at the company's quarterly product launch.
Sun's T10000 tape library already has AES-256 encryption built in. Spectra Logic claims it is adding encryption to its tape libraries.
And, the LTO (Linear Tape Open) Consortium announced last week that encryption will be part of the LTO 4 specification.
