Day 2 highlights

By John Gallant

Ed Kamins used to be CIO at Avnet. But his new title is a little more intriguing -- chief operational excellence officer. So, what does that mean?

Kamins told Vorticians at Wednesday's morning session that his goal is to drive excellence in everything that the company's 11,000 employees do. That means employees are charged with improving the processes that they are responsible for.

He said he measures success on a variety of metrics, including return on capital, gross profit per employee and on-time delivery. Those, and other metrics, are put into chart form and put on the walls of the company, so the information is very public.

In terms of innovation, Kamins said he has taken some basic company processes, like distribution and IT, and actually turned those into services that are being offered to select customers.
