Other voices, other views: New perspectives on recent topics
When it comes to linking to other views, I'm not the best of bloggers - but I am trying. Please enjoy these gifts of insight and opinion on some recent topics discussed in this Vortex Blog.
A few weeks back, I talked about how failed Federal Communications Commission policies have emboldened the telcos to threaten big Internet companies like Google or Yahoo! with new surcharges to support their traffic. In this piece, Network World reporters Jim Duffy and Denise Pappalardo explain why IT executives need to start worrying about this so-called 'net neutrality' debate. (Hint: Think higher prices.)
Of late, I've been waxing political about Google's decision not to humor the Dept. of Justice's request to share lots and lots of search data. (To catch up, read this first and then this.)
Network World columnist and Internet protector Scott Bradner also weighed in on the debate with this excellent column about the madness of King George.
In addition, two other Network World columnists - test expert Kevin Tolly and industry watcher Frank Dzubeck - offered their perspectives on Cisco's attempts to make its networks more application intelligent. That's a topic I explored in this piece and in my recent discussions with Cisco CEO John Chambers and Juniper CEO Scott Kriens.
According to Tolly, there's more FUD than light in Cisco's Application Oriented Network plan and the whole shebang is vulnerable to competiton on the 'marketecture' front.
Dzubeck hits even harder. In his view, Cisco's Services Oriented Network Architecture may actually be counterproductive to customers trying to embrace services-oriented applications. SONA is not lined up well with current Web services standards and, while networks need to get smarter, SONA may not be the smart way to go.
See, I can link with the best of them! Enjoy and share any thoughts right here.
