Help to shape the new Security Standard conference

By John Gallant
NetworkWorld.com, 05/25/06

Dear Vorticians,

Having wrapped up our discussion on network access control, but being still in a security frame of mind, I wanted to give you a heads up on a new project I'm working on - a project about which I'd love to get your insights.

Working with Bob Bragdon, the publisher of CSO Magazine, I'm putting together the program for a new, executive-level conference called The Security Standard. (Tagline: The Security of Business. The Business of Security. I like that.)

Our goal with The Security Standard is to create a new kind of event that explores the most important business issues centered on risk management and the challenges of creating a truly secure organization - even, if it's possible, making security a competitive advantage in a very uncertain world. We want to bring together senior business and technology executives to explore the intersection of organizational, political, business and technical issues shaping security today.

This won't be about products and marketing. Rather, The Security Standard will look at security from a variety of angles both within and external to the corporation. We're crafting a program that will help guests understand how a wide swath of individuals and influencers view security today and how those views shape their interactions with corporate America.

Among the voices you don't normally get at security conferences, we'll hear from the general managers of business units who deal with chief information security officers to build secure businesses on a day-to-day basis. We'll talk to chief marketing officers about how security is affecting customer perceptions and their market positioning. We'll talk to CEOs and CIOs about how they are assessing risk and creating security awareness from the boardroom to the loading dock. We'll talk to HR leaders at major corporations about how they're educating and informing employees. We'll talk to security pros who've endured major business disruptions and experts who'll look at worst-case scenarios we should all be thinking about. We'll also talk to demographers and market researchers who will help us understand new behaviors and new risks in the workplace and marketplace. And that's just some of what we have planned.

All told, our guests will get a 360 degree view of security in the 21st century. But more important, they'll get from the senior leaders on stage and in the audience the kind of insights into solving their problems that they won't find anyplace else.

How can I use your help? Take a look at the program and share your thoughts. Also, there's still time to get in some great speakers, so let me know who should join us on stage. If you'd like to help us with the program, let me know.

Thanks for sharing your insights. This is going to be exciting!

Bye for now.

Mobile Security: The Essential Ingredient for Today's Enterprise - Qwest
Software and technology solutions help mitigate security risks and safeguard from threats, but they require IT staff to select, deploy and maintain them. Problem is, today's IT environments are lean. This paper examines the current mobile security landscape, including myths surrounding the risks and threats, and how organizations can establish a solid mobile security strategy.
