Time Warner VPN customers get prioritization
NetworkWorld.com, 05/03/06
While not innovative, it’s something that most customers want. That’s the ability to prioritize traffic over their Layer 3 VPN. Time Warner Telecom is about to rollout this upgrade to its Managed MPLS VPN service.
Time Warner Telecom is far from the first service provider to support four classes of traffic prioritization for VPN customers. Verizon Business, AT&T and Sprint have been offering traffic prioritization for sometime. But regardless of the timing, using CoS to better support traffic, especially time sensitive applications such as voice and video, is in demand.
One area where Time Warner Telecom is innovative is its support of Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). The service provider has been offering Layer 2 VPLS services to customers for about three years now. It along with Masergy and Broadwing are the only providers offering national VPLS services today.
For more on VPLS availability check out our recent story. AT&T and Verizon Business say they are working on VPLS services. Sprint on the other hand, is offering Layer 2 VPN services based on Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol v3 (L2TPv3). It has no plans to offer VPLS at this time.
