AOL getting into the VoIP game
NetworkWorld.com, 05/08/06
Next week AOL is expected to launch a VoIP service that will allow customers to receive Internet calls when online.
The service is for AOL’s 41 million AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) subscribers according to an article in the New York Times.
The service is called Phoneline.
AIM customers will be offered a free phone number that will allow them to receive calls from users with traditional phone service and other online users.
Phoneline customers will have to pay for outgoing calls made with the service. According to the New York Times report, customers who want to use Phoneline for outgoing calls will be charged $14.90 per month for unlimited outgoing calls. Customers can get a lower monthly rate of $9.95 per month as AOL launches the service.
Phoneline is AOL’s answer to other peer-to-peer VoIP services from companies such as Skype and Yahoo. Click here for Network World’s latest coverage of Skype.
