Telecom tax relief
NetworkWorld.com, 05/25/06
The U.S. Treasury Department finally abolished a tax law that has been in existence since 1898. And even if you’re not too familiar with the federal excise tax on long distance calls, you could imagine that a tax law that’s been around for 108 years is outdated.
But if you’re a telecom manager chances are you’re well aware of the tax and have perhaps even started filing claims for a refund from the IRS as long as three years ago.
One analyst is quoted in a Network World story as saying large businesses could be looking at multimillion-dollar refunds.
Consumers and business customers have been paying a 3% tax on all long distance calls. The Treasury Department says the tax was originally created as a luxury charge for consumers that were wealthy enough to have a telephone in their home.
But for the regular Joe, we’ll have to file for a refund in early 2007 when we file our 2006 tax return.
